1. Students must be motivated to learn, they must have goals they want to meet, and the understanding that they are competent and able to achieve their goals. I need to provide opportunities for my students to reflect on their learning, provide time for my students to work together in small groups, and create units and lessons that contain real world connections.
2. I need to assess each student and understand their strengths and weaknesses. Students that have special needs or requirements may have modified assignments, opportunities to work with peers, additional time to complete tasks, and any other support that will help them succeed. Gifted students will be given the opportunity to be a leader in the classroom, and will have opportunities to express their creativity in different ways.
Your comment about students feeling competent is very important and I agree with the small group opportunities. The rest your comments tell me that you really are dedicated to your students.
The students will work so much more diligently when they see that you take the time to differentiate your instruction.
How can I help my students become self-directed learners?
Give students the opportunity to make decisions about their learning during projects, assessments, etc. Students can not learn to be independent if they don't get to practice!
· How can I support the diverse needs of learners?
Be diverse yourself! Don't get caught in the same old routine of doing things. Explore new ways of learning, new projects. Ask students to get involved. Everyone in the classroom should be excited about learning and the teacher should be a leader in this area!
