I just want to let everyone know how impressed and pleased I am with the quality of units you have created. If you haven't checked them all out, you should. It will be possible for you to do so over the next couple of weeks as they stay on the website. Your units are full of creative ideas and innovative uses of technology. Student-centered learning is emphasized at every turn. It makes me want to be a child again and have the chance to experience these awesome oportunities. Your students will benefit so and I hope that each of you enjoy implementing these units in your classroom.

Thanks, everyone, for working so hard on your units. I know they are a "work of the heart". I have so enjoyed working with all of you.

Reflect on how the focus of this module has helped you plan and create your unit.
I think getting feedback has helped as has getting to look at the units prepared by others.

How can I prepare for and facilitate an effective showcase?
Some of the aspects of using technology is still challenging, but it is getting easier. It helped to have all the pieces saved in one folder and ready to download to the wiki.
How can I provide constructive feedback? It is important to look at all components of the unit and evaluate how effective the person has been in involving students in the processes and integrating technology into their projects. It helped, since I have already used my unit in the classroom, to know how well certain factors worked and what I could improve on in the future.

Module 8

Reflect on how the focus of this module has helped you plan and create your unit.
How can I prepare for and facilitate an effective showcase?
The biggest factor in my showcase was being able to talk to the instructor when I had some major technical problems that were over my head. It was very reassuring to get support when I was very nervous everything wasn't going to work. Technology is wonderful...when it works!

How can I provide constructive feedback?
It is important to really look through a unit and see all the aspects. Everything I looked at was so good, I felt it made the requirement of evaluation easy!

Consider how the knowledge you gained from this module will impact your teaching and your students’ learning. Record your insights, key learnings, and questions or concerns in your reflection.
I believe what I have learned is already impacting students. Fifth graders presented Powerpoints of Native Americans yesterday. I feel more confident to try new things with the understanding that everything may not go as planned, but it is always an opportunity for learning! My biggest question is still how to master all the technology, but with everything changing as it does, I there will always be more to learn.

Module 8 reflection

Reflect on how the focus of this module has helped you plan and create your unit. This module has helped me create my own unit by allowing me to view and comment on my classmates units. By seeing their work and reading their comments in the discussion then I can relate them.

How can I prepare for and facilitate an effective showcase?
To prepare for an effective showcase I need to make sure that all of my information is organized. I also need to make sure that I read the directions very carefully since I have never created a wiki before.
How can I provide constructive feedback? To provide constructive feedback I can make sure that I use the showcase feedback form and that I thoroughly look through my partners unit plan. I will try and place myself in their shoes so I can see exactly how their unit will flow and work.

Module 7

*How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
One of the first things I can do to make sure my classroom is student-centered is to teach my students how to use the technology that they will be using. Since I teach first grade I usually start by teaching them the basics about the computers so that they can become comfortable using them and being independent. Once they are comfortable using the technology I can utilize unit plans that are more student centered. In first grade we spend a lot of time learning how to work in a student-centered classroom.

*How can I use technology to support my instructional practice?
I can use technology in a variety of ways. One way would be to allow my gifted student to work on a project of her own. This will allow her to work at her own pace and expand her knowledge beyond our first grade classroom. In our building we have new white boards this year and I can use it during instruction to help reinforce concepts.

Module 7

How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom? I must create an environment that is welcoming, where students feel confident and willing to try new things. I don't want them to be worried about making mistakes or answering a question incorrecly. I must create activities and projects that allow students to explore and dive deep into meaning, rather than lecture and give tests. I want students to be in charge of their learning. I really like the idea of project-based learning because students are more hands-on and have a bigger voice. It promotes responsibility, as well.

How can I use technology to support my instructional practice? I want to move away from paper and pencil, and rely more on my computer. It saves on paper, and is much more engaging. I will use power points to teach, interactive and engaging websites, and many other things. I want students to be comfortable using everyday technology, such as laptops, projectors, scanners, printers, cameras, wikis, and blogs because we are becoming so technologically advanced in society. They need to be prepared for this to be successful in future careers.

Module 7

How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
It is important to create a classroom climate where students are not afraid to make mistakes & are comfortable taking chances. I feel students should be given choices in their learning & be able to learn
using their own learning styles. Cooperative learning is another way to facilitate a student-centered classroom & is great way to do project learning.

How can I use technology to support my instructional practice?
Technology supports my instructional practice in many ways. Using a powerpoint presentation to share information with parents is one way I am using technology. I am able to communicate with parents much
more effectively by the use of e-mail and my teacher web page. My classroom students are excited to learn using technology & I am able to find many resources on the internet to motivate & challenge each learner. I am slowly but surely becoming more confident in using technology & will continue to look for ways to improve my teaching using technology.

How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
I can think outside the box of the "old" ways of doing things. I can embrace new technologies and strategies even if I am uncomfortable with them. By being open-minded and continuing to learn, I will set an example for my students.

How can I use technology to support my instructional practice?
The ways technology can be used are endless! You can take it from letting students type notes on a laptop to producing a classroom film project! I am excited to continue growing in this area.

Sunday, August 31, 2008

How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
By engaging the students in the planning of their projects, they can begin to see that they are in charge of what they learn. Working in cooperative groups will give them more freedom to explore and learn from others. By "working the room" and constantly posing questions to the students and monitoring their progress I can direct their efforts and keep them focused on projects.
How can I use technology to support my instructional practice?
A power point presentation will introduce the key questions. Checklists made with word will keep both the students and myself on track. A graph will be made to gauge home energy usage. Research will be done on the internet through bookmarked sites. Journaling and checking of knowledge will be handled through a blog.

Module 7

How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
The best way to accomplish this is to pick out a topic, then use well designed plans to keep the students engaged. The last part is to make sure that you are there in the classroom by moving around and asking students questions as they work. The questions should be ones that will provoke further thought and discussion by the students.

How can I use technology to support my instructional practice?
I feel that technology, when used well can make a teacher’s instructional practices even better. Technology allows teachers to create projects that can not only increase a students learning but also increase their interest.

Sunday, August 24, 2008

Activity 6: Reflecting on My Learning
How can I help my students become self-directed learners? I can encourage them to persue their interests. This may be as simple as teaching them how to find books about things they are interested in. (In kindergarten this is teaching them how to ask the librarian for books about a given topic.) I can encourage students to ask questions.
Self-directed learners know what to do when a task is completed (get a library book, a file folder game) and they must be taught these things.

How can I support the diverse needs of learners? I can provide instruction in a variety of ways. Kindergarten students need many "hands-on" opportunities.

Module 7 Technology

How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
To facilitate a student-centered classroom, I will, first, need to be able to change my role. I need to be able to allow the students to be in charge of their learning, and I take on the supporting role. I am there to provide positive feedback, make suggestions, and assist if needed. The classroom becomes an active learning environment with the students working collaboratively. Through collaboration they develop confidence, problem solving skills, leadership roles, and enjoy learning. The use of unit and essential questions provide the opportunity to help develop the thought process. To help implement this new teaching style, rubrics, checklists, printed directions, and scoring guides will be provided as a packet. They will be used to guide the students on their learning adventure.

How can I use technology to support my instructional practice?
Technology is at the core of our project. The students will be developing skills in the use of Microsoft Word, Publisher, and Excel. They will learn practices necessary for searching the internet for research. The inclusion of developing a wiki and blog site increases the development of 21st century skills. Our own development of a wiki provides my partner and I with an accessible location for all the components of the unit. Eventually, the unit could be all completed through the use of the computer.

Through the development of the student sample and our wiki, I have increased my own technological knowledge. Each module seemed to introduce another step to the development of a student-centered classroom, providing a variety of methods. The class made me look at learning in a different, but effective way.

Module 7 - Technology

How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
When I first began this workshop, I wasn't sure if I could establish a student-centered classroom in a Spanish 1 setting. After all, the students are learning to communicate in a 2nd language and that is not necessarily something they can accomplish without teacher instruction. However I've learned that there are many ways I can facilitate a student centered classroom. The use of questioning techniques - such as open-ended questions, appropriate planning, on my part, ahead of time and allowing students to participate in the planning process as well can help in establishing a student centered classroom. I think it also will take a lot of practice by both me and my students to truly establish a student-centered classroom.

How can I use technology to support my instructional practice?
Technology can be used in so many ways! I use computer programs to create plans and presentations for my classroom. The internet, blog, wikis, etc. can be used to facilitate a student centered classroom and help students learn the material as well as prepare them to succeed in their future education/careers. The use of technology to support my instructional practice is only limited by my knowledge/ ideas.

Module 6 reflection

How can I help my students become self directed learners? In a first grade classroom this is an ongoing process throughout the year. I can provide my students with checklist and rubrics to help guide them in their learning. However in 1st grade we will spend a lot of time learning to become self directed. At first we will do our checklists and rubrics together and then as the year progresses we will be able to accomplish more on our own.

How can I support the diverse learning needs of my learners? One way I can support my diverse needs is by knowing what type of a learner all of my students are. In the primary grades most of our learners are kinesthetic learners and so I need to be sure that I give them plenty of "hands-on" opportunities. I need to also make sure that I challenge my higher level students and give them opportunities to develop their projects more than the rest.

How can I help my students become self-directed learners?
If I provide the students will the resources they need and then encourage them to work through challenging problems I will start them in the direction of becoming self-directed learners.
How can I support the diverse needs of learners?
By being aware of my students needs and using all the resource people that are available I should be able to meet their needs.

Module 5: Assessing Student Projects

How do I assess student learning? Primarily I use observation and checklists.

How do I involve students in the assessment process? Students are given many opportunities to show what they know. I try to give them a variety of ways to demonstrate the learned material.

Saturday, August 2, 2008

Module 6: Reflecting on my learning

How can I help my students become self-directed learners? As a teacher, my focus is to encourage my students to become self-confident and self-directed learners. Using reflection journals, rubrics (for clear guidelines & expectations), and checklists (to work toward end products & to organize information), are all ways I can help encourage my students to become self-directed learners.

How can I support the diverse learning needs of learners? As a teacher, I need to be positive & encouraging and find areas that each learner excels. It is important to provide choices to my learners as long as the same learning goal is met. I feel it is important for students to learn to work together cooperatively to reach common goals & when grouping students cooperatively, to group them in a thoughtful manner.

self-direction/diverse needs

1. promoting self-direction by students: I can provided direction by giving them a checklist to help keep information organized; I can prepare rubrics to outline clear expectations that students can use throughout the unit; Teachers must be active and letting students know that they are there but giving them feedback as needed not actively controlling each step.

2. support diverse needs: I can offer a variety of options to meet the same goal; not every project has to look the same. Teachers can team teach allowing students to help one another and give peer directions; use the special educators available to help determine the best course of action in some instances. -Leslie

Module 6 Reflection

How can I help my students become self-directed learners?
As a teacher, I need to be ready to guide and support the students, helping them build the skills necessary to take an active role in their learning. By providing self-directing activities or projects, the students will learn to meet challenges and solve problems along the way. The students will pre-assess their own knowledge, giving insight to the key concepts of the unit, and be provided with directions, checklists, rubrics, and scoring guides to help direct their learning and assessments. Through collaboration on projects, the students help/assess each other and assess their own progress necessary to reach the learning goal. Allowing students to assess the work of their peers will help them become aware of the quality needed in their own creations. I will need to be there to make suggestions and try to give positive feedback whenever possible.
How can I support the diverse needs of learners?
Varying the types of lessons will help accommodate all learning styles. Pre-assessments will help identify individual student capabilities. Collaboration and cooperative learning projects will provide opportunities for all students to take an active part effectively. They will also allow individuals to use their strengths in a “team” effort of creating a final project. Students that learn quickly are able to “teach” other students, providing leadership roles. Other students are able to take advantage of asking peers questions and are more comfortable in the learning process. Accommodations are made for students with special needs, allowing them to take part in the learning process. Self-directed projects help students at all levels find success, increasing their over-all learning.

Module 5 Reflection

How do I assess student learning?
I am using several assessment measures throughout the project. I will have students assess themselves using checklists and informal assessments such as questioning. I have a rubric for the final project and guidelines/steps to complete the process.
How do I involve students in the assessment process?
Students will use the checklists as a self-assessment. They will also be involved in a discussion of the rubric and other assessment measures to ensure understanding of what is expected.

In the future, I would like to involve the students more in planning the assessments. Creating a student example also helped when thinking about how I want to assess students and what to look when assessing them.

Module 5 Reflection

Reflect on how the focus of this module has helped you plan and create your unit.

How do I assess student learning? I am assessing student learning through the use of a variety of assessment tools. K-W-L and student journals (and possibly a jeopardy game --- I am still working on this one!) will help assess prior knowledge and understanding along the way. Throughout the unit, the students and teachers will use checklists and scoring guides. Teacher-Student conferencing will be used as needed. Peer editing will give the students a chance to evaluate activity results of others. Reflection questions, charts/graphs activities, interactive computer activities, and a final project will identify for me the student/class strengths and weaknesses.
How do I involve students in the assessment process? The students will assess their prior knowledge using K-W-L and their journals. Throughout the unit, the students will use checklists and scoring guides for self-assessment and to measure their progress. The students will have a chance to identify necessary items to be included on graphing scoring guides ahead of time. The students will pace themselves through several activities with only a deadline to meet. They will have chances to peer edit/evaluate activity results of other students, strengthening their assessment awareness.
Consider how the knowledge you gained from this module will impact your teaching and your students’ learning. Record your insights, key learnings, and questions or concerns in your reflection. By completing a student sample first, I was able to view activity products from the “students’ eye view.” It allowed me to focus on what was necessary to complete my objectives. Some activities we had thought about including became just that –activities for “fillers” or “fun,” not really necessary for the completion of our unit goals. By completing this module, the students will concentrate on necessary components, and I know what end result is expected. Steve and I know what skills are necessary to prepare the students for completion of our activities and also be useful in the future.

Module 5 assessment

I will have my students participate in several phases of assessment. We will do a KWL to preassess what they already know. Aslo there will be a rubric to go along with the advertisement they will be making. This has specific expectations and a variety of levels of completion that students will be able to check as they complete the assignment. Likewise, students can assess what they are learning by sharing their ideas in their blog entries. I plan on allowing them to fill out a reading incentive chart or "ladder" as they read various books so they can see how they are doing in becoming better readers.

This will help the students gain a better understanidng of what they already know and what they have yet to learn about various genres and fiction and non-fiction. It will help them reach our learning objective and putting the publication together will play a positive role in the curriculum outcome I have established for this project. They will grow in their technology skills and have gained a feeling of control over their learning by seeing themselves capable of completing these tasks.

Friday, July 18, 2008

Module 5 reflection

How do I assess student learning?I will be assessing my students learning in a couple of different ways. To begin the unit I will use a KWL chart and questioning for prior knowledge. Then I will use checklist so my students know exactly what they need to do for the collage and brochure. I will be using an observation checklist so I can monitor my students very close. At the end of the unit I will give a power point test that will see what they have learned from the project and then I will use a project scoring guide to give them an overall grade.

How do I involve students in the assessment process? The students will definitely be involved in the checklist since it is their way of knowing where they are at. I will also use the observation checklist during short conferences with the students.

Consider how the knowledge you gained from this module will impact your teaching and your students’ learning. Record your insights, key learnings, and questions or concerns in your reflection. Preparing the assessments in advance will be a great help to me during my Kansas Day unit. I hate to say it, but usually I work on my assessments as I need them. Having all of the assessments will give me more time to focus on my students during the unit. I need to keep an open mind though because I may need to adjust my assessments as I see fit throughout the unit.

Module 4

How can the creation of a student sample help me clarify unit expectations and improve my instructional design?
By creating a student sample, I can understand the steps needed in order to complete the project. It can also help prepare me to answer some of the questions students might have and determine some of the questions I want to ask the students in the blog.

How can I ensure students will achieve the learning objectives when creating their student projects? I think by having the students check their own work and check on them while they are completing the project will help. Also be referring to the rubric, allowing for reflection, and discussion will help ensure students achieve the learning objectives.

Module #5 Blogging My Journey

How do I assess student learning? I will assess my parents/students learning using several types of assessments. I will use a K-W-L Chart throughout the unit to assess prior knowledge & to show understanding of new concepts. During my unit I will use a graphic organizer on a blog site. To complete the unit, I will use peer feedback, discussions, reflection questions & a group collaboration rubric.

How do I involve students in the assessment process? They will evaluate themselves using a group collaboration rubric.

Consider how the knowledge you gained from this module will impact your teaching & your students’ learning. I learned to look at assessment from not just a teacher’s point of view which is what I normally would look at assessment from, but from a student’s/parent’s point of view. As teachers, we are required to evaluate students daily but by giving students the opportunity to evaluate themselves, they can develop more ownership in their learning and in projects & end products.

Module 5 Reflection

Module 5

Reflect on how the focus of this module has helped you plan and create your unit.
I had never done a unit "backwards" where you think about assessing first. It really helps me focus my teaching.
How do I assess student learning?
In the unit I am planning, I am assessing students through checklists, journals, role playing, PowerPoints, student-teacher conferences, rubrics, and an essay.
How do I involve students in the assessment process?
Students will be in charge of the checklist. They will evaluate themselves using the rubrics. They will edit their journals and peer edit their final essays.
Consider how the knowledge you gained from this module will impact your teaching and your students’ learning. Record your insights, key learnings, and questions or concerns in your reflection. As I mentioned earlier, I have learned to see assessment from a student's viewpoint. I understand now how important it is to let students have ownership in their learning. Teaching them to evaluate in a non-critical and useful way will benefit them in the future. As adults we are required to evaluate situations and make decisions. Practicing those skills in a safe environment will only give students confidence and direction in their own future choices.

Friday, July 4, 2008

How do I assess student learning? Students will be constructing an electrical circuit, completing a checklist, answering questions on a blog site

How do I involve students in the assessment process? They will be assessing themselves as they complete projects through the checklist, when they complete a home energy survey, and as they use higher level skills to write a persuasive paper.

Mod 4 Reflection

How can the creation of a student sample help me clarify unit expectations and improve my instructional design? By creating the students sample, I was able to see what was working and what wasn't working in my unit plan. I was also able to see what I had neglected to address in my unit. I looked at my curriculum-framing questions and made sure that I was addressing each one, especially the content questions.

How can I ensure students will achieve the learning objectives when creating their student projects? The learning objectives I created address my curriculum-framing questions. Each slide that the student creates answers a different content question from my unit.

Module 4 - reflection

By doing the student sample and module four I have a better understanding of what my students will need to be able to do to meet the learning objectives. I can see how the use of the Internet and making a publication can enrich learning and have a positive role in meeting the curriculum of my library. I also grew in that I am learning more technology skills and will be able to pass these on to my students not only in this project but in many other lessons I will be doing in the coming year. I think the students will take to this project because it involves the use of the computers and I am glad the module had us do a sample project to work some of the "bugs" out of what I was planning ahead of time.

Module 4: Students Sample Reflection

How can the creation of a student sample help me clarify unit expectations & improve my instructional design? The creation of the student sample helped me to understand & foresee the frustrations my students may experience & the approximate time it will take when creating their own projects. This sample also taught me how to create my own blog site that I will use with my parents/students during my family reading night.

How can I ensure students will achieve the learning objectives when creating their student projects? The parents/students will be given the opportunity to use a blog site possibly for the first time. During the family reading night the parents/students will work collaboratively using the prepared blog site to organize information and complete a graphic organizer. In each student’s education career blog sites will possibly be used over & over and knowing how to navigate & use a blog site is essential.

Module 4 Student Sample reflection

How can the creation of a student sample help me clarify unit expectations and improve my instructional design? How can I ensure students will achieve the learning objectives when creating their student projects?By completing the student sample I was able to gain a better understanding of what my students would need to know. Now I will be able to focus more on what my students will need to know. To ensure that we reach our learning objectives I will use a checklist and a rubric to go along with the brochure. This way the students will know exactly what I expect of them, and I will be able to make sure that they are reaching the objectives.

Consider how the knowledge you have gained from this module will impact your teaching and your students’ learning. Record your insights, key learnings, and questions or concerns in your reflection. Through this module I have been able to see how the internet can make a positive impact on my teaching and my students' learning. I have found some web sites that I can definitely use with my 1st grade students and I have explored a couple of different projects for them to work on. I am still concerned that making a brochure might be a little difficult for my students. I have a couple of ideas that may make this a little easier. We could work in pairs and complete the brochure together as much as possible. Another way to help would be to have my students work with an older student when making their brochure.
How can the creation of a student sample help me clarify unit expectations and improve my instructional design?
The student sample helped me experience first hand the frustrations my students will face. It also allowed me to understand how to make myself more clear when explaining the project.
How can I ensure students will achieve the learning objectives when creating their student projects?
Through the use of checklists, rubrics, presentations, and other standard assessment forms like test, we can see if students are comprehending the information they are required to know.

Module 4 Reflection

Module Questions
1. How can the creation of a student sample help me clarify unit expectations and improve my instructional design?
By completing a student sample, I became aware of what the students were expected to accomplish, approximate time necessary to complete the activity, and assessment requirements. I became aware of some of the frustrations the student might experience, and dealing with them provided the opportunity for me to grow in my technological knowledge and skills.
2. How can I ensure students will achieve the learning objectives when creating their student projects?
Students will demonstrate the targeted skills multiple times, reinforcing learning. A checklist and rubrics will be provided for student self-assessment. To increase 21st Century skills, the students will work collaboratively using a Wiki site to organize and publish their creations.

Module 3

How can I use the internet to support my teaching & students' learning?

I have just completed my first year as a Title 1 Reading Teacher. I am excited about looking for new ways to use the internet with my students. Being in the position I am in, I usually only have students about 25 minutes a day, so doing extensive projects with my students is really not feasible. I have been searching for reading interactive sites that I can take my students to that will enhance concept or skills they are learning. I would also like to create a teacher web page that my parents & students can go to where they have access to not only my e-mail but to many interactive reading sites that they can use from home.

How can I ensure responsible & appropriate use of the Internet?

Again, I only have my students for a short period of time each day so monitoring their internet use is relatively easy for me to do. When we use the internet, I am always interacting with my students & checking that they are on task. I always try to make every minute count!!!!
Today is the first day I was able to get on to this blog site so I am currently trying to figure out how this works. The internet at school blocked this site but yesterday our tech guy came in & unblocked it for me. Yea!!!!!!

How can I use the internet to support my teaching and students' learning?
The internet will allow my students to communicate with their host families in an entirely different way. Host families will be able to contact students online (only with my assistance), rather than "snail mail", to talk about their visit. It will be a much faster response time.

How can I ensure responsible and appropriate use of the internet? Students and parents are asked at the beginning of the year to fill out a computer-user policy where they agree to certain online rules. I will also do a lot of the online "stuff" using a projector and one laptop. When the students are all using computers, I will monitor the students continuously and frequently check screens.

Module 3

How can I use the Internet to support my teaching and students' learning?
I'm really excited about the possibilities, of using the internet with my students. I have used it in the past but there are some new considerations I have discovered. For instance, in the past with my ITV classes, I have created some activities in which the all my students can interact with each other, usually offline, but with this unit, I realized that I can have them all interacting online with almost every activity. This not only helps my students learn the subject area but allows them to interact with others they do not know - something that doesn't always occur in a 2A school!

How can I ensure responsible and appropriate use of the Internet?
Monitoring is one of the most important ways in which to ensure responsible and appropriate use. A school can have all sorts of other provisions in place but without monitoring student work, you can't ensure that students are following all guidelines.

Module 3 Reflection

After reading this module I will encourage my administration to have the elementary students/parents sign an acceptable use policy for the upcoming year.

Another thing I was excited to learn about during this lesson was the eductional, student friendly and speciality search engines.
One way I have learned to use the Internet to support my teaching and enhance student learning is how to use Google Images. (Thanks to the ladies who sat with me during the face to face training.) I had never done this prior to class. I often tried to look for pictures on the internet but Google Images will make this so much faster and easier.

Another thing I learned was about the copyright laws and how they apply to internet usage. This knowledge will not benefit my students as much as it wil me.

All students and parents sign a computer agreement form in the fall, however I feel the primary way to promote responsible and appropriate internet use is through constant monitoring. My kindergarten students do not conduct independent web searches. They are allowed to go to sites that I have previously marked as favorites.

Module 3 Activity 9

Module 3 Activity 9
• How can I use the Internet to support my teaching and students’ learning?
The Internet is the integral part of this unit. The students, collaborating with a partner, will use the Internet to research U.S. cities, locate pictures or clip art, access/record weekly stats, and locate information from credible sites. I will need to make sure the students are aware of /use the rules of “fair use” and citing when necessary. The students will make informed decisions by locating information concerning a player’s abilities/successes on the Internet before deciding whether or not to make a player trade. I don’t know if I’ll use the online collaboration tools at this time, but they are certainly items to consider for inclusion in the future. I just need to feel a little more comfortable with their use before asking my students to use them in the classroom.
• How can I ensure responsible and appropriate use of the Internet?
I do like the idea of student blog sites to allow students to express opinions, especially at the higher levels. Using blog and wiki sites without advertising will help make sure inappropriate material is not attached. The use of blogs and wikis both allow for teacher input along the way. In any case, my teaching will need to include discussions on copyright guidelines, appropriate uses of, and responsibilities associated with Internet use. Students will need to be introduced to/reminded of the idea of citing sources used. The use of AUP’s and student/parent contracts will help cut down on inappropriate usage of the Internet. Last, but not least, students will need constant monitoring throughout their usage of the internet.

Mod. 3 Internet Use

How can I use the internet to support my teaching and students' learning?

How can I ensure responsible and appropriate use of the internet?

This module has made me look at using the internet more in my Kansas Day unit. I would like to have my students use e-mail to correspond with someone at the Kansas State Historical Society. Hopefully this person will be able to give us information about Indians found in Kansas.

To ensure responsible and appropriate use of the internet I will discuss the computer use contract with my students. Usually it is something that I have the parents discuss with their students. A lot of times the parents just tell their child to sign on the line and don't really discuss it with their child, so if I discuss it with the students they should all understand the things we should and shouldn't do on the school computers. Since I teach 1st grade I need to make sure that any site I send my students to is safe for them. I usually don't allow them to just "surf the web." I usually have the web site(s) they are supposed to go to in a word document or in the favorites list on the computer. This way I have a little more control over where they are going on the web.

Mod 3 Afterthought

I found the copyright section very interesting. I found out how little I really knew. This is definitely something that should be discussed with the students before starting any unit involving research for information or pictures from the internet.

Mod 3 Internet Use

The internet is a valuable tool that is increasing in value in the real world. Students need to become familiar and comfortable with its use to keep up with real world trends. Students can use the internet, not only to research and chat, but for classroom learning and practice on skills. I use QUIA, a site that allows me to design games that include material from chapters. In my science class, I basically took tested concepts, and worded them in different ways on different games. The games could be accessed from school or home. They allowed students to practice the material/concepts, and increased understanding of the chapter. It also allowed me to give computer graded quizzes, if I chose. I set up several quizzes on basics like terms of math operations and properties. The students take the quiz at a determined time. If they didn't pass, they were able to retake the quiz to try to improve their score. Steve introduced us to Timez Attack this year, which is an internet based computer game (set up like a video game) that allows the students to practice multiplication facts. The kids love it! We also were allowed to do an introductory trial to Study Island, a math site with skill practice based on the state standards by grade level (which the school is purchasing the license for our use next year.) The students use the internet to design placemats for a class luncheon in Social Studies. Their designs were sent to an in-house business class that printed and laminated the placemats. It made the placemat production a lot easier, and the students had some pretty cool placemats in the end.

To help control appropriate use and responsible use of the internet in the high school, our district requires the students and parents to sign a permission form. It states that use is only allowed as long as the student is using the internet access appropriately. We have a little more control in the grade school setting, but as the students become more aware of what is on the internet, that may have to change, especially in the upper level. Monitoring sites to be used helps, but instructions for inappropriate material that may pop-up need to be given.

Internet Use in Learning - Module 3 Everyone should respond to this also

How can I use the Internet to support my teaching and students' learning?

How can I ensure responsible and appropriate use of the Internet?

The internet is a valuable, real-world tool at which students should become competent. Monitored use on research and other projects in class can increase their confidence and capability, making them more successful in their studies.

Trying this out

Lois and I are sitting in the motel. I can get on and she can't seem to get on even though we are sitting right beside each other?????

Day One Done

Hi Judy and blogmates (is that what we are??),
I had a hard time keeping up today. I am going to try a different computer tomorrow and see if it was me, or my computer. I'm hoping I'm not that slow, yet. Anyway, I think this is going to fill my "extra" time this summer, but hopefully, it will be worth it. I'm thinking once we really get started, things will fall into place. (At least that is what I am hoping for!)

Anxious to get started,
Peggy
